A frustrating journey
Apr. 19th, 2012 10:36 pmI went into London this evening to see the opera Jakob Lenz by Wolfgang Rihm at the Hampstead Theatre in north London. Not knowing the theatre I set off early to give me plenty of time to get the tube up to Hampstead and find the theatre.
After the train left Woking, the penultimate stop, the guard came on to tell passengers that there had been a lightning strike at Vauxhall, delaying trains into Waterloo. And sure enough, we soon came to a halt and it was stop and go - long stops and short goes - all the way to Waterloo. I arrived too late for it to be worth taking the tube as I wouldn't get there until some time after curtain up.
As Waterloo was rather congested, I had a short walk around London before attempting to come home, and that train was only 25 minutes late. I've just started reading Little Dorrit, so I got through a few pages of that.
