I was watching the film The Green Man this afternoon, a fifties British comedy about an assassin trying to kill a pompous businessman on a dirty weekend at a seaside hotel. When the target checks into the hotel he looks at the restaurant menu and makes disparaging remarks about "brown Windsor soup" and something I heard as "chopped toad". That I'd never heard of, so I looked it up.
Chopped (or chop) toad turns out to be toad in the hole, but made with chops instead of sausages. My mother made toad in the hole often when I was growing up, but I don't recall ever having come across this version.
