Terry Waite and me
Dec. 10th, 2012 01:13 pmSeeing Waite's name in the paper today reminds me of an incident that happened when I was shopping in Sainsbury's in Lewisham over twenty years ago. The person behind me in the checkout queue suddenly said to me, "Sorry about your brother".
Apart from the fact he lived in Milton Keynes, I could see no reason why anyone should pity my brother. I asked what he meant, and he seemed to think my brother was Terry Waite. (This was at the time of Waite's captivity.)
Now, Waite actually lived in nearby Blackheath and I had once seen him walking through Greenwich Park. We are both big, tall men. (I think Waite is taller than me, and I'm 1.9m.) And we both had black hair and beards (now grey, judging by the photograph in the paper, as is my beard). So, obviously we must be related.
