Nature Red in Tooth and Claw

As I was getting up this morning I stuck my head through the curtains and heard some birds making a racket, a single high-pitched note repeated rapidly.  There were several birds swooping around in front of my house.

Then I noted a cat outside my front gate and it seemed to have something moving in its paws.  The cat ignored the birds swooping above it and subdued its prey then serenely walked down the road with the dead bird in its mouth.  Whether it intended this for its own private use or as a gift for its human, I don't know.
