The way I do it is post to Dreamwidth with the post mirrored to Livejournal, and a footer saying that this is happening

The code to include comment-count is
%%comment_image%%, so "There are %%comment_image%% comments there so far."
I have no idea why this returns an image rather than a number, but apparently there is no other way to do it.
