Back in the eighties, I started collecting Stockhausen records on vinyl.  At that time, just about everything he wrote was being released on the Deutsche Gramophon label.  Then he set up his own publishing company and bought up the masters to these recordings and released them on his own label.  This was just as I was going over to buying CDs.

Stockhausen Verlag did start producing CDs but very few record shops in the UK stocked them, and when they did, the prices were astronomical.  You had to order the CDs from Stockhausen himself by mail order.  The company did set up a website, but even then the only way to order was to download the catalogue and write to them,  And they'd accept only cheques, not credit cards, and the cheques had to be in US dollars or marks, later Euros.  Eventually, they even allowed internet bank transfers.  It always amused me that Stockhausen, one of the pioneers in modern technology in music, should have such an outdated system for selling his music.

I did discover a shop in Berlin last year that stocked a large number of his CDs.  Even then they were expensive, but I did indulge myself.

Then, just now, I checked the website again, and it seems you can order the CDs online and even pay with PayPal:

I can feel a sudden drain on my credit card coming on.

Congrats! Did you get the one that's mostly silence (or am I thinking of someone else)?

You're thinking of John Cage, who wrote 4' 33".
