A Touch of Cloth

dormouse1953Now that I'm back from holiday there's the matter of getting through all the programmes my Sky box recorded while I was away. One of these was a two-parter on Sky over the Bank Holiday called A Touch of Cloth. It was advertised as a spoof detective show, which didn't fill me with hope, but it did have Charlie Brooker's name attached to it. I like his TV review programmes on BBC4, but I found Dead Set went on a bit too long. Didn't see Black Mirror.
Well, I found it absolutely hilarious. It was a bit like Police Squad/Naked Gun, but exploding the clichés of the typical British cop show. To paraphrase Tom Lehrer, most parodies don't go far enough, this one went too far, and it worked. It helped that the leads, John Hannah and Suranne Jones, both of whom have previous in cop shows, played it absolutely straight. In fact, one comment on the IMDb stated that it was based on an actual unproduced script for another cop series and "they drew cocks all over it".
Too many good lines and visual jokes to quote any, but I was curious by a couple of comments on the IMDb about it having an unfortunate title, made by people who hadn't realised it was a spoof before actually seeing it. Well, the title was obviously an echo of A Touch of Frost, but other than that completely meaningless to me. So I googled "touching cloth" and found it had a modern slang meaning that I was totally unaware of.
