As I mentioned in a comment on another blog, I just received through the post my polling card for the police commission elections next month.  And somebody else's.  Same house number, different street.  Presumably I could turn up at the polling station, produce this card, and vote twice.  Assuming that the guy hadn't managed to vote already.  And assuming the polling station staff don't recognise me turning up twice.

Not that I'm planning to,  In fact, I haven't even checked who's standing in this area and not sure I want to vote for any of them any way.

The commissioner election is a complete waste of time and money, and reflects an Americanisation of politics. In a representative democracy I vote for MPs who appoint a review board that in turn appoints senior policemen, why bother me about it.

My whole life, I've voted because people fought and died for me to gain that right, but this election -- unnecessary, bread-and-circuses politics which just adds to expense and creates yet more jobs for the boys -- is tempting me to break that tradition and boycott.

Indeed to both comments. I have voted in every local, parliamentary and European election since I was eighteen, forty years now, but I can't summon up the enthusiasm for this one. Of course, I haven't seen who's standing yet - no leaflets have appeared - but if I see there's someone I really don't want to get in...
