A few months ago I went to a concert given by the BBC Symphony Orchestra under their then chief conductor Jiri Belohlavek of Ripening, a tone poem by the Czech composer Josef Suk. I like Suk's music but didn't know this piece, which I enjoyed. I then discovered that this orchestra and conductor had recorded the piece.
Now, I'm always hearing pieces of music I enjoy and if I bought recordings every time I'm sure I'd quickly go broke, so I keep a wants list on my computer and whenever I feel like I can afford it I select a few items from this list and order them, usually from the company MDT which seems to have a good selection of classical music.
I ordered a number of discs last week and the Suk arrived this morning - it had been out of stock and sent separately. It was only after I had put the disc in the CD player that I noticed it was a recording of Suk's A Summer's Tale, although with the same orchestra and conductor.
My first thought was that MDT had sent the wrong disc but when I checked, the e-mail they sent confirming the order had said "A Summer's Tale", as did the e-mail telling me it was out of stock and the e-mail telling me it had been dispatched. Furthermore, the disc's catalogue number matched that in the order. When I checked my wants list, the catalogue number in that was the one for A Summer's Tale. All I can assume is that when I entered the disc in my wants list, I had looked it up on-line and read off the wrong catalogue number. And never noticed the discrepancy at all points after that.
I already had a recording of A Summer's Tale, with a different orchestra and conductor, and this recording has an extra item by Suk I don't know, so I'll keep it and put it down as a learning experience.
