This hotel has the system where you put your key in a slot by the door to operate the electricity.

I got back from breakfast this morning to realise that I'd left the key in the slot.  I traipsed back down to reception.

"Happens all the time," they said as they produced a new key.

Exactly why I always use some other expendable card, e.g. a Tesco clubcard - the slot is just a switch, it doesn't care what you put in provided it fits the physical size of the key card.

Of course sooner or later they'll start using specially sized cards or something to stop that, but it hasn't happened yet.
